BREAST IS BEST

Here is why it’s become so important for me to fly the flag for attachment parenting values such as breastfeeding.

How did it come about, you becoming a spokeswoman for breastfeeding?
“I am not sure really. I mean, I never meant for it to happen that I would become this breastfeeding ambassador… When I originally posted pictures feeding Sophia on Instagram when she was a lot younger, I didn’t think it would invoke the reactions [both positive and negative] that it did. Now, I know when I post a photo it’s going to get a reaction, so it’s a conscious decision. But I am ok with that.”

Why do you think some people have such a strong reaction to it?
“I don’t know. It’s so weird to me and I honestly don’t get it at all. Mums are supposed to be in it together - helping and supporting one another. And I totally get it, some people are not able to breastfeed, but this is not about that. It’s about supporting one mum’s choice to do what’s best for her child.”

What motivates you to keep spreading the positive message?
“I get so many comments saying, ‘I was going to stop breastfeeding but now you have inspired me to carry on’. Those kind of messages are so amazing to me that even if I can inspire just a handful of people to do what they truly want to do and what they think is right for their child, then it’s worth it.”

Why do you think it’s so important to talk about breastfeeding in the public eye?
“I feel like there is still a long way to go in attitudes towards breastfeeding, which is why I feel so strongly about it. Hopefully by the time Sophia is a mum, people will accept it and it won’t be such a topic for anger and debate. It will just be appreciated for what it is and it won’t be such a ‘thing’. It’s so sad and such a shame, in a way, that something that is so natural can be perceived to be so wrong. I am giving my daughter the most natural thing that she could have – where’s the harm in that?”
