LOVE AT FIRST BITE

Like any new mother, Tamara Ecclestone had to find her way through the weaning process with her daughter, Fifi. Here, she tells of her experience, and how continuing to breastfeed helped her along the way.

How did you approach weaning?
“When Fifi was ready I just got straight into it. I would introduce one type of food, and then give her the same thing for three days, just to make sure she wasn't going to get an allergy, or if she had a reaction then I would know what it was from. So if I was feeding her sweet potato or avocado or carrot, I would do only that for three days and then move onto the next thing. I also followed the baby-led weaning approach, so I let her feed herself. She actually learnt really quickly to use a spoon.”

How did continuing to breastfeed her throughout help?

“I knew that because I was still breastfeeding, I didn’t need to stress out that she wasn’t getting enough food initially. She could have as much milk as she needed to keep herself full.”

Did you look to any books or experts for advice?
“In the beginning I just did purées of one thing, like avocado, or sweet potato, or peach and then when I wanted to get more adventurous and try different blends I downloaded the Annabel Karmel app and tried all of her different recipes. It’s really good because it tells you at which stage to introduce what food. I followed her plan and it really worked for Fifi.”

And how is Fifi with her food now?
“She loves eating anything that I eat. For example, she likes quinoa because I am obsessed with it. Part of the beauty of the baby-led weaning ethos is sitting down and having a meal together, eating the same thing. It shouldn’t be that you eat one thing and they eat another. If I am healthy, she is healthy. We travel and eat out, but I try to not order off the kids’ menu for her - she eats off my plate instead. I hate how kids’ menus in restaurants always have the same thing: pizza, hot dogs, burgers – it’s all so unadventurous. Wherever you go, it’s the same thing. I mean, do they need to have chips with everything? Don’t get me wrong, I am not like “you can never have chips”, but that doesn’t mean she should have them every time we go out for a meal!”
