Dear Body,

You are pretty amazing. Pre-baby I definitely had a habit of pushing you to the limits: crazy spinning classes, boxing, personal training, running, diets. If there was a fitness craze, you could almost guarantee that I had tried it.

I was relatively conscious about what I ate and put into you, but I was never too strict because food has always been one of those fabulous pleasures in life. You could just say that I was into feeling good and, by proxy, I enjoyed you being in good shape too. I wasn’t svelte by any stretch of the imagination, but I would look at you in the mirror and think “ok”. Which, I think by any standards is quite nice.

When it came to trying for a baby, I was conscious to eat better, exercise more moderately and it was like I was aiming for a higher purpose, to get you ready for what was to come. After a few months, I – we – happily, and luckily, became pregnant.

You, dear body, in all your glory gave my baby everything it needed and at that point I gave over to you.
I listened to what you demanded (you seemed to always crave white carbs), but I also helped where I could along the way: taking supplements, doing prenatal yoga, being health conscious, but not health crazy.

Then, we both got tested to our limits – childbirth. One of the most incredible and intense moments of my life, but in that moment we were totally in sync. We pushed a baby out, and life as we both knew it changed for ever. You helped me feed and nourish my babe and my eyes were opened to the wonder of the human, maternal body. It’s been a turning point.

Post-baby, our relationship is different. I work full time and every spare moment I have is spent with family – I don’t have time to exercise and keep you in the tip-top shape you were in before. And whilst there was a period of time that I felt guilty about it, I’ve made my peace with it. I might not be as slim or as toned as I used to be but I – we – made a human. And it pretty much blows my mind on a daily basis. So what I would say to you, Body, is thank you. Thank you for bringing me my babe and thank you for teaching me priorities in life: the ultimate selfless love for another that presides over any narcissistic tendencies, and the ability to accept my body for the miracle-worker that it is.

Body, I salute you.

Love always,

Jess x
