From the minute my daughter was born, I was attachment parenting, without knowing such a thing existed. I wasn’t away from her for longer than an hour for the first year. I didn’t plan it, but as time went on, the idea of having time away actually became scary. Just after she turned three, our dear friends invited us to their wedding, but not our daughter.

The wedding was too far from our place to get there and back in a day, and so my mum offered to have our daughter overnight. I knew it would happen at some point so I agreed. But I was dreading it – how would my daughter feel? I should have left her sooner so that she’d already feel used to it. What if she needed us? What if she didn’t feel well or missed us?

But it was more my problem than hers. She absolutely loved being with her grandparents, they had a ball. I texted all evening, even though she slept through the whole thing, and rushed back the next day to see she was immersed in her colouring and barely looked up to see me!

Now on the other side of it, I realise that not only was it good for my husband and I, it was great for me to remember that little corner of myself that I’d put behind me as soon as I got pregnant. I came back with a massive smile on my face and knew it was worth doing, for all our sakes. I still felt guilty, but it made me realize how important it would be to do it again. So, whether it’s work, weddings or just trying to have some time to yourself, how can we make the most of time away without the overwhelming guilt? Here are a few little tips:

  1. RELAX! If the pressure to enjoy is too great, it’ll be a mess. Don’t over-think it or plan for every second predicated on it all being perfect. Just go with the flow as much as possible and enjoy.

  2. Agree on the times you’ll check in with your childcare beforehand, so that you’re not calling when someone’s driving or interrupting supper-time. FaceTime can be amazing, but try and establish if it suits your child before you go – leave them to it if you think that seeing your face will confuse or upset your child.

  3. Buy two little teddies or keepsakes, and if you wear scent, pop a little spritz on them both. Explain to your child that while you’re away they can cuddle that toy and you’ll be cuddling yours so you’ll feel connected. Or draw a little heart on your hand and in the same spot on your child’s hand and tell them to kiss it and you’ll share that kiss.
