Christmas Money Saving Tips

Christmas is the most wonderful time of year when you can treat your friends and family to special gifts. Nobody wants to come into the New Year feeling like they’ve spent every last penny in their pocket. So why not try a Christmas celebrating the art of budgeting? Hold on to those pennies, boil those home-made jams!
Create A Digital Family Slideshow

Sometimes creating a slideshow of family photos can be a great way of making people laugh or reminisce on good times. You can easily open a powerpoint presentation and start pasting in photographs. If you have a tech-savvy niece or nephew you can ask them to wire it up to the living room tv so everyone can see! Try adding music for a more entertaining effect.

Secret Santa: With Spice

Secret Santa’s are a great way for everyone to get a gift, have a giggle and not spend too much money on gifts for everyone. And Secret Santa doesn’t have to be simple – you can quirk it up a bit! Try these different themes to inspire each other creatively.

  • Homemade Gifts Only
  • Drinkware – This could be a wineglass, a coffee mug or other kind of travel cup. This seems boring but there are a limitless amount of funny mugs to be found online
  • Christmas Ornaments – These could be Christmas decorations, snow globes or cute sparkly window-sill ornaments! Nobody can ever get enough of those.
  • Pound Shop – There are some interesting things to be found in pound shops. You could find a mug, bike accessories- or even a fake CCTV camera!
  • For The Kitchen – Examples of appropriate gifts include food, cookbooks, cookware, gadgets, refrigerator magnets, and anything else associated with the kitchen.
  • Junk Food  – Surprise each other with king-sized American chocolate bars, cereals or marshmallow spreads.
  • Baby Products – This could be a great idea to help people stock up on baby products.
  • Smell – Scented candles, lotions, hand wash.
DIY Gifts
  • Baked biscuits in Paper Bags.
  • Home-made jam ideas: Cranberry Jam, Ginger Apple Jam or Plum and Mulled Wine Jam.
  • Knitted Hats
  • Personalised gift websites can offer you printed mugs and phone-cases. Perfect for a gift with a thoughtful touch.
Use Your Loyalty Cards

Claim on all the points you can in supermarkets, beauty stores and online accounts. At the end of the year you can find yourself with a good fiver or two in cash back.

Don’t Overbuy Food

There’s a tricky talent to buying food for the most important dinner of the year, and sometimes we can go way overboard. Or not buy enough! Try Love Food Hate Waste to help you get perfect food sizes.

Use Voucher Codes

Just by putting in an extra 5 minutes to find a suitable voucher code you can save yourself a few pounds! It doesn’t seem like a lot, but after buying a good 20 or so gifts, you could save yourself up to £100! Alot of supermarkets send out vouchers when you have a points card with them.

Set A Budget And Stick To It

Think of the total maximum spend then divide this up between the number of people you have to buy for, weighting up and down according to importance and expectations. If one or two gifts go over the individual budget, you can even it out quickly by making sure the next couple of buys are under-budget.

Family Gift Baskets

If a family has too many members to buy gifts for, they will always appreciate a basket of diverse goodies to share between them. This could be cordials, jams, chocolates & gift vouchers.

Spread Some Christmas Cheer

One of the coolest gifts you can give someone is to donate money to a charity on their behalf. Choose a charity they strongly believe in. You might also want to consider contributing unwanted household items, groceries and clothing to charities that help out those in our society who might be doing it tough this Christmas.
