One of the most frequently asked questions from my followers is “How do you do it all?” and I also often get told that I appear to have such a great work/ life balance. Well, the smoke and mirrors must be working as I definitely don’t feel balanced in the real world, some days far from it as I run and miss the train! Someone even actually used the word “glamourous” recently and, as sweet as the comment was, I laughed out loud. If you are lucky enough to see me on the school run I doubt that glamorous would be the first word that comes to mind. That said, I thought it might be a good idea to share what a typical working day looks like for me lately.

A typical “Term Time Tuesday” in the life of Style-Mum and twins…

MORNING

6:30 am: Alarm rings – I have to use the most irritating alarm sound just to make sure I don’t snooze it too many times (go and listen to Radar on iPhone it is the worst!)
6:40 am: Snooze…
5:50 am: Snooze – hopefully for the final time
7:00 am: Check my phone, emails etc This is very brief but a ritual I just cannot break
7:10 am: Jump in the shower
7:20 am: Roughly dry my hair and try and curl it but in the usual rush it is going to have to be a bad hair day!
7:30 am: Wake the boys up. Alfie will jump out of bed, but Aidan will need a bit more persuasion (takes after his mum)
7:35 am: The boys are so used to the routine and being rushed that they have a quick wash and throw their uniform on – usually missing a tie but it’s too late to look for it
7:40 am: Family teeth-brushing session which then leaves the bathroom in dismay
7:50 am: In the car ready for the school run. The boys go to breakfast club on a Tuesday so it helps speeds things up at home and they get to eat pancakes so they’re happy!
8:00 am: Park at the station and treat myself to a coffee from the kiosk for the journey as no one would want to deal with me until I’ve had my caffeine hit
8:30 am: Make it just in time for a pre-work meeting with a PR luckily at The Ned so I don’t have far to go to my office
9:30 am: Finally arrive at work and start my working day. My 9-5 is in financial services, I am a Financial Paraplanner for a city IFA

AFTERNOON

12:00pm: Run out the office and head to Bank station for the central line into the West End, a quick scoot around a press day and a coffee with a PR before I’m back on the central line to the office
5.02 pm: Finish work and I’ve made my usual train home in time for the kids
5.45 pm: Collect the boys from their tutor
6.00 pm: Quick change, a 10 minute rest and a snack before heading back out the house
6.45 pm: The boys have athletics club and while they are there I take full advantage of an hour spare and hot foot it to Waitrose for tonight dinner ingredients…Salmon, veg and rice

EVENING

7.45 pm: Time to go home – The boys have had a super busy day but have loads to tell me in the car (car chat with my boys is my favourite time of the day)
8.15 pm: A late dinner for the kids this evening due to a hectic schedule, usually they eat at 6.30pm. Hubby eats with us tonight which is lovely to all sit together
9.00 pm: The kids are showered and reading in bed just in time for me to watch Love Island! (Guilty pleasure)
10.00 pm: Start work again: emails, research, content writing and planning for the week
12.00am: Bed, but still slightly wired so either a chat with hubby or a book to make my brain switch off before it all starts again in the morning.

So whilst that is a typical day, no two days are the same. I am also super lucky to have such a hands-on hubby who helps out when a day just doesn’t run to schedule. My advice is to take each day as it comes…. Yes, you can have your processes that form the framework of your day (alarm – school run – work – pick up kids) but having an open and flexible approach to everything that falls in between is, for me, the best way to try to make it work. And if all else fails…. Tomorrow’s another day. You can only ever do your best!
