When my daughter, Poppy, was tiny, packing for holidays meant way more pain than pleasure. The planning would begin in my head about three weeks early, usually at 4am awake in bed, calculating how much SPF/ shampoo/ baby wipes/ bottom balm we’d need for every day of our trip, let alone the logistical nightmare of the journey itself. Fast forward to last month with a big getaway to plan for. A mega one. I’m talking two weeks, long-haul, sunshine and swimming pools and day-trips galore. Destination: a staycation at our friends’ enormous pad in Connecticut. Did I hit peak heart palpitation? Weirdly, no. She’s now 3½ and so much easier to manage, and there’s been a strange shift in these past 18 months: I’ve started auto-parenting. I used to consider everything outside of home a chaotic, unpredictable scenario – a trip to the supermarket, days out, nights away – but slowly I’ve become fluent in thinking ahead and packing only the essentials in all the right quantities.

“Slowly I’ve become fluent in thinking ahead and packing only the essentials in all the right quantities.”

A bit like when you learn to drive a car, all of a sudden you’re changing gears instinctively without even thinking about it. It’s taken me a while, far longer than other friends who nailed mumming in year 1, but everything feels a little less daunting and more default. So packing for this trip became a total joy, mixing my auto-mum planning skills with fun-filled beauty to bond over, plus some simple doubling-up products to save precious luggage space. Here’s what I packed for her, for me, and for both of us to share…

Just for Poppy:

  • SUNCARE

She gets heat rash so I always use suncream that doesn’t contain perfume as that’s a harsh skin irritant. For all-day excursions, I slathered her with Fifi & Friends High Protection Sun Cream SPF 50 from head to toe before getting dressed, indoors. If we are poolside or in the garden, I make sure to keep reapplying after every time she jumps in the pool!

  • HAIR ACCESSORIES:

As a little treat I bought a load of new clips and elastics from H&M and Mimi & Lula, a gorgeous brand I recently came across on Instagram.

Just for Me:
  • SUNCARE

For all day trips, I’d be in Ultrasun SPF30 for body and face, and by the pool I used Vichy Ideal Soleil Anti-sand SPF30, then went down to Sisley Summer Body Oil SPF15 and Sisley Facial Sun Care SPF15 in the last few days. I know it’s a massive taboo, but I absolutely love getting a bit of a tan so I reapplied religiously and never let my skin burn.

  • FACIAL CARE:

Applying layer upon layer of chemical sunscreens meant stringent cleansing. I used Pixi + Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse twice a day, and Beauty Pie Super Pore Detox Black Clay Mask every few days to draw out any residue SPF. Every evening I applied my favourite facial oil, Vanderohe No1 Nourishing Face Serum (all the botanical extracts are amazing at replenishing sun-parched skin). And I always travel with a mini jar of La Mer Moisturising Cream; it’s hands down the best sunburn-soother for pink noses and foreheads.

  • MAKEUP:

I got my brows and lashes tinted just before we left, so I took the bare minimum! My all-time favourite Bobbi Brown No Smudge Mascara and for total decadence I brought Guerlain Terracotta Ultra Bronzer – it’s a non-sparkly shimmer and smells divine – with a big blusher brush to add a glow to cheekbones and shoulders

  • FRAGRANCE:

I’m all about summer perfume spritzed on my hair and clothes in the evening, just in time for poolside cocktails. I brought two with me this year: Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess and the addictively sunny Sana Jardin Berber Blonde, created by master perfumer Carlos Benaim.

What we shared:
  • BATHCARE:

Washing off SPF every evening is crucial and I wanted a shower gel for both of us that would cut through all that cream, and be mild enough for Pops. I chose Soaper Duper Zesty Lemon Body Wash, which is ultra natural and free from industrial chemicals such as SLS, parabens or colours.

  • HAIR:

We both have a LOT of hair that gets really tangled, so I drenched us both in Fifi & Friends Conditioning Detangling Spray after towel-drying. I’ve been lucky enough to trial this before its official launch, and I absolutely love the clean-laundry, cottony scent compared to so many others that smell of really aggressive fruit salad. Another hair must-have was my Wet Brush. Personally I think it’s better than the Tangle Teezer as it glides through thick, tangled roots and doesn’t tug at all. Can I admit something? Poppy now has her own one!

  • NAILS:

Painting our nails together sounds really silly, but it’s become a lovely bonding ‘girly’ ritual for us. I kept things simple and packed one bottle of Nails Inc Mindful Manicure Rainbow Topcoat – it’s the nail polish equivalent to unicorn shimmer. Poppy loved the sparkle-factor and initially I thought it would look a bit naff on me, but it added a really chic, fresh glow to naked nails and looked fab over my neon pink pedicure.
