It’s 9 o’clock, the doors to pre-school have just been opened, everyone is filing in eager to get going with their morning’s fun. Not us though. We’re sat outside in the car. Has there been a tantrum, have we forgotten something, why aren’t you getting on with it I hear you ask?

To clarify, this morning we will not be leaving the car until I have succeeded with what I can only describe as a Herculean task – booking a swimming lesson for my five-year-old. I have learnt from my woefully poor performance last term and will never again be so blasé as to call the sports club at TWELVE minutes past nine after I’m home from the pre-school drop off. How could I possibly have expected to obtain what I now realise is the most sought-after ticket in town – the 4.30pm Stage 2 swim slot with ‘Instructor X’ – with such a crappy attitude?! Those twelve minutes cost me dearly. This time I will therefore be sat here for as long as it takes, hitting redial on my phone whilst the pre-schooler wonders what on earth mummy is playing at.

“I have become the family PA/Social Secretary. It’s just another aspect of the Mental Load that we constantly juggle as mums”

But it doesn’t end there – securing the swim slot plays into my strategy for After School Club booking – an online, fastest-finger-first-style event that kicks off at 19:00 tonight. Reminders have been set; login details have been dug out and Post-Its stuck to the laptop; Bedtime antics and thoughts of dinner will not distract me! I will book Lego Club for Thursdays!

Is this all a little bit mad I ask myself? Is it really such a problem if he swims on a different day that clashes with Lego Club, perhaps he could do Craft Club instead? Well in some ways yes… A whole term of my son being disappointed isn’t a great prospect, for one. But secondly, this strategy has actually been carefully thought through: keep Fridays free for getting out of London on the weekends; Have Wednesdays available to meet up with our besties for playdates; get the boy out of the house on Thursday when the husband favours working from home.

Essentially, I have become the family PA/Social Secretary. It’s just another aspect of the Mental Load that we constantly juggle as mums, but you know what, it turns out I’m rather good at this bit. And if I have an off day, Craft Club’s not so bad, is it?!
