My Baby Is My Boss

I went freelance in 2016 and I haven’t looked back since. I love the creative freedom and diversity of my work – without all the internal politics and meetings.

But as with everything there are drawbacks, which were only heightened with the arrival of my son, Otto, last February. I’ve worked every day in some capacity since he was born – at one point my motto was ‘the juggle is a struggle’ – but I’m learning how to juggle both worlds.
Here are my 5 top tips for being a freelancer and a mummy. I am proof that it’s possible to do both!

  1. Create an office space – It doesn’t matter where it is but just make sure those unsterilised bottles and piles of dirty laundry are out of sight so you can focus on the task at hand.

  2. Have a back-up plan – Inevitably there are those days when they are too poorly for nursery but you’ve already committed to a deadline. I’m lucky enough to have my mum and two sister-in-laws on speed-dial for emergencies and then I continue to work when he’s asleep.

  3. Transparency is key – Not going to make that deadline? Need to move that meeting? Be honest and up front and people tend to be understanding.

  4. Learn to say no – This is the hardest lesson for a freelancer, but if it doesn’t work for you and your family then don’t take it on.

  5. Have digi-free days – I make sure there are days when I spend quality time with Otto without being glued to my phone so he has my undivided attention. And this is what makes it all worth it.
