Sling-Wearing vs Pram Pushing

Gemma and Sam from hip mama blog, This is Mothership, have been battling it out on baby topics on Fifi & Friends for a while now. The debate continues this month with the girls discussing sling-wearing (Gemma’s favourite) versus the virtues of pushing a pram (Sam couldn’t be without). Let’s hear what each has to say…

Keeping it Hands-Free – Gemma

“I’ve always been a minimalist, a less is more kinda gal.”, Gemma
I hate clutter, and everything has to be in its place. I only use small handbags and take the bare essentials (phone, keys, credit card, red lipstick) out with me each day, and I don’t understand people who lug everything plus the kitchen sink around with them on a daily basis.

When I had my daughter Belle, I bought an Ergo baby carrier and at the time I didn’t realise it would become my best friend. From birth I used to carry her everywhere. Belle on my front, and a Moschino backpack on my back. I had everything I could possibly need, plus 2 free hands. I loved the freedom of being able to go where I liked and not being restricted by escalators, crowds and narrow passages that I would normally have to manoeuvre through with a buggy. Belle came to work with me, on shopping sprees and on the tube on a weekly basis. The Ergo carrier helped to keep me sane during those first few hormonal months of being a new mum as it gave me so much freedom to keep up as much of my old life as possible, just with a cute new accessory attached. The only problem was I’d have to wait around for Sam whilst she went to find a lift so she could come and meet me with her buggy!

Pushing That Pram – Sam

“I’m a pram pusher and proud. I hold nothing against sling wearers, it’s just I tried it once and it wasn’t for me.”, Sam
I couldn’t get to grips with strapping it onto myself with a flailing newborn squawking at me. It was the height of summer and when I’d just shed 7 and a half pounds, the thought of strapping it back onto me left me feeling sweaty and Leo didn’t look comfy in it. So that was my excuse not to persevere thus leaving me fully reliant on my pram. Which was no bad thing. Get yourself one of those nifty pram organizer thingamajiggys that Velcro onto the handles and your pram will double up as a place to store your phone, keys and coffee (vital). Add one of those bag clips, and your Tiba and Marl can dangle safely from the handlebar too. Not to mention the handy storage under the buggy and all the days errands, you know, like the M&S Simply Food run, all your ASOS returns etc etc.

I used to look at Gemma and think ‘wow’ at how free she looked, waltzing out of the tube station with Belle while I’d navigated to the nearest stop with lift access (there are not enough). She looked so free without the carthorse-cum-pram but then she had to carry her shopping home with her, while my Zara bags we’re safely tucked beneath my sleeping babe.
