In comes the two year old, curls bouncing, butter wouldn’t melt: “Mummy I saw an Incy Wincy.  Poor Incy Wincy. Where’s he gone the Spider?  Let’s go and see Mummy.” And off I am reluctantly led to the living room.

Obviously at this point I am hoping to find a fat lot of nothing in the living room, but instead I find a fat lot of spider. My dad would call a spider of this size a “galloper” – sadly my dad, the spider lover, is not here on standby for such occasions. It’s just me, my preschooler, and the big guy. And so whilst my preference would be to seal off the living room until another grown up is available, I do what I have to do and somehow manage to catch the spider and fling it into the street, all whilst maintaining an air of composure so as not to freak out my daughter.

That’s the thing about being a mum, isn’t it? The buck regularly stops with you.
Whether it’s cleaning dog poo off the scooter wheels or dealing with the fact that there’s no hot water at bath time, you just can’t wait around for someone else to show up and sort the situation for you. I guess my examples aren’t so serious, but my point is: every day as mums we step outside of our comfort zones and handle things we previously wouldn’t have thought we could, because when it comes to your kids you just have to step up and be the woman for the job.

My time came to step up when my daughter, still a baby at the time, was seriously ill with suspected Sepsis. I was on my own with her and things deteriorated really quickly – it was on me to appreciate the gravity of the situation, call the ambulance, and be ready should things get any worse.

Clearly I am not the hero of this story and it was thanks to the paramedics and hospital staff that my daughter got the medical care she needed (and all is fine now). However, I do think that as someone who is generally bad in a crisis, I managed the situation very well. And if I had been given the option to delegate this responsibility to someone else there is no way I would have done that – I am the person that she can depend on one hundred percent. Always.

And so that’s the point – as parents, we should all give ourselves a pat on the back. Yes, it’s exhausting, and sometimes downright scary, but thank you motherhood for showing us what we’re really made of (but please, no more spiders!)
