The Big Bed Transition

The cot-to-bed move is a tricky one to time just right, isn’t it? Having found ourselves free of the disturbed sleep of the baby days and into a blissful era of having a contented, self-soothing toddler with a penchant for lie-ins (don’t hate me, she woke hourly for the first 9 months!), we were hesitant to stir things up in the sleep department. If it ain’t broke, and all that?

But with baby number two very much on the way and knowing that making big changes to Ottilie’s sleep was likely to be much more painful with a young baby thrown into the mix too, we decided to bite the bullet and go for it. The decision was very much led by Ottie too, since we’d seen how much she loved the ‘big girl beds’ at her cousins’ houses and as she’s just a couple of months away from her second birthday, we felt the time was right.

“We’ve made her a cosy reading corner with a little canvas teepee and some blankets and floor cushions.”

One intense evening of online ordering later and a few days of waiting, we were ready to pack away the cot and our well-worn collection of sleeping bags and transform Ottilie’s baby bedroom into a space fit for the big little girl she is (sob!)!

All in all, it’s been a fairly smooth transition. We’ve of course had a few cases of night-time wanderings and Ottie has been waking up earlier than she used to, but she’s also cut another tooth in the last month and she was an early riser during last summer too, so I can’t say any of that is down to her being in a bed instead of her cot!

Here’s what’s made our lives easier, since making the cot to toddler bed step:

‘Gro to Bed’ bedding set

There’s been one hero product I ordered alongside the bed itself that I’ve been completely thrilled with, and that’s the ‘Gro to Bed’ bedding set from the Gro Company. It’s a sheet, pillow case and duvet set that all attaches together, and aims to prevent night-time wakings due to little ones having kicked off covers/lost their pillow/getting tangled up in their duvet. The pillowcase is integrated into the sheet itself and the duvet cover zips directly to the sheet on both sides- completely genius! It is of course more expensive than a regular toddler bedding set, but it’s meant I’ve never once worried about Ottilie getting cold during the night or ending up with her head underneath the pillow. 100% worth it, in my opinion!

Audiobooks

I’ve noticed a big shift in how long it takes Ottilie to fall asleep in the past few months as she’s nearing her second birthday, and whereas she once would be happy to be kissed goodnight and left alone to fall asleep, for the past few months she’s been asking for us to sit with her whilst she drops off. In an effort to help her relax into sleep, I went on the hunt for some lovely audiobooks that she could listen to at bedtime. And it’s worked a charm! Our favourite one is ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Other Stories’- half an hour of familiar, gentle stories set to classical music that never fails to send her right off to sleep. Great for car journeys, too!

A bedroom refresh

To help Ottilie feel excited about her bed and going to sleep in the evening, we’ve tried to create a lovely cosy, relaxing bedroom space for her. My husband painted the walls for her as a surprise whilst we were away in France last month (Farrow and Ball ‘Chamomile’, top points to Jason for an excellent choice!), and we’ve made her a cosy reading corner with a little canvas teepee and some blankets and floor cushions. It’s now my favourite room of the house!
