I know I’m not alone when I mention juggling all the balls – in fact, I didn’t actually realise how good I was at juggling until I became a mother! Sometimes my juggling skills are so good that I could join the circus and other times they are barely in the air. As a mother of twins trying to hold down a city financial job, manage the home and write my blog, it does make me rise above my own body and wonder how this is all seamlessly happening. This out of body experience then leads me to admit that all is not as it appears! I’m not saying that just because I’m a working mother that I have more balls to contend with, each mother has their own set of tasks and responsibilities – and we are all just trying to hold it together.

Recently more balls have been added to my load with work, making me drop some every now and then! I used to want to run and hide and not let the kids, my husband or other mums notice that sometimes you just can’t keep up with it all. I had an extreme moment of this recently that led to a teary outburst in front of my two boys. They looked at me shocked – Mum’s not ok, what do we do?! I sat them down and we had a good old chat about how in life sometimes it’s ok if things get too much and you need a little cry. It’s better to do that than to pretend that you are super human.

“We are all made the same way and sometimes we are just not ok and that is absolutely fine”

This day really resonated with me and how honesty with your kids is key; we teach them to always tell us the truth, so why can’t we be a little more open sometimes? I’m not saying tell them everything, but if your boss was a little tough, a friend has been a little difficult or you just feel completely run down, tell them. In my case on these kinds of days my kids have sometimes been a little more understanding and may have even made their beds… Even if I still had a million tasks to complete just this one moment of understanding from one of my 9-year-olds will have helped me get through the rest of the day. And even if I have moments where I drop all the balls, the feeling of knowing that I don’t need to pretend to be perfect in my kids’ eyes makes the world of difference and I’m sure will support their mental health and wellbeing as they grow too.
