Jessica Portway is founder of Cottage Toys and Interiors, a children’s lifestyle store specialising in toys and interiors. She lives in Surrey with her husband and their two young daughters.

The family company originally started as a craft business creating handmade wooden doll’s houses. Since Jessica has taken over, it has evolved into a successful online boutique where you can find stylish nursery furniture and décor alongside traditional wooden toys, and innovative designs for imaginative play.

From royal baby-inspired schemes, to the colour palettes to look out for, we asked Jessica for her top tips for decorating your baby’s nursery this spring.

Read her decorating guide below, and scroll down to find out how you can enter our competition to win a baby bundle from Cottage Toys, Fifi & Friends and The bonnie mob.

Current Trends

My favourite trend for nurseries this season is inspired by Prince Louis. The Duchess of Cambridge is said to have opted for a Peter Rabbit theme for the newest royal. A woodland rabbit theme is easy to incorporate into a nursery with accessories. A nightlight such as this gold rabbit design adds a magical touch, and we love this sweet bunny blanket too, perfect for both boys and girls.

 Colour Palettes

I always recommend a neutral colour palette when decorating a nursery, adding colour with the clever use of soft furnishings and accessories. That way you can change the look and feel of a space as your child grows without having to re-decorate. 2018’s colour palette of the year is ‘ultra violet’ which is already being reflected in this season’s nursery designs. You can add hues of pink and purple with accessories like our felt cloud baby mobile hung above a cot or changing table.

 Furniture

Nursery furniture is usually the biggest expense when it comes to decorating a new baby’s room, so it’s important to get it right first time. Invest in a beautiful cot that can be turned into a cot bed for example. Brands such an Incy Interiors offer unique and practical designs that will grow with your child. Our favourite has to be the rose gold Ellie cot (featured above).

 Clever Storage

Baskets, baskets and more baskets! There are so many different shapes and styles that can be used for different things. We love our large wicker basket with tassles. Smaller styles like these are also great for storing nappies and creams on a shelf or changing table. The Oeuf NYC mini library is another clever storage idea with ample shelving to display favourite books and toys. There is also a cupboard for hiding clutter.

 Decoration

Decoration is where you can really have fun, introducing a colour or theme. Our felt animal heads make a playful addition to a neutral wall and work perfectly with an animal theme. Wooden toys, such as a beautiful dolls’ house like Cherry Tree Hall, or our retro rocking horse, are also lovely ways to decorate a chlid’s space, as well as providing entertainment! We also love the idea of creating a little reading nook in the corner of a nursery. Our hanging canopy in grey or pink, filled with cushions and a little basket of books, is the perfect place to sit and read. These canopies are also wonderful hung above a cot.
