What is Hygge?

Hygge, (pronounced ‘hoo-ga’) is a Danish concept encouraging us to embrace home comforts, warmth and pleasure in everyday moments. It can be enjoying a candlelit snuggle on the sofa with your children or spending time over a meal talking about the meaning of life with those you love the most in the world. Sometimes you may even enjoy some time alone!

Even the shops around us are full of candles, cushions and blankets to make our homes more snug and comfortable. The Danish term itself is a loose translation of the word ‘cosiness’. What does ‘cosiness’ mean to you? When we think of this word, we see pictures of small cottages with hot cups of tea and steamed windows. Not all of us have small cottages in the countryside, and the challenge of being Hygge is a question of creativity.

Things you can do to be more Hygge:

Pillows

When organising your sofa or pillows, you can use a colour scheme generator to pick your colours. One colour wrong and the cosiness could be ruined! Coolors.co is a website that can help you with this.

Turn Off Machines

Mobile phones and computers can make us feel pressure to respond to messages or provide us with over-stimulating images of reality. Try to enjoy the simple things and finding interesting things to talk about with friends or family. Appreciate the boring things!

Build A Mum Network

In Denmark, new mothers are given the names and contact details of other local women who have recently given birth. They are then able to meet to chat and support each other. Seek out your own support network at a mother-and-baby group and share a warming hot-chocolate and a slice of cake with the mums you meet. Very Hygge.

Draught-Proof Your House

You can buy or make your own under door draught stoppers to stop a cold breeze coming into bedrooms. You can put them around windows or buy excluders for your keyholes.

Make Bath Time A Moment For Peace

Take bath time with your child as a moment for de-stressing and closing out the world of work and pressure. Light some candles (out of their reach) and play some classical music. The next few minutes are for focusing entirely on you and your baby with no interruptions.

Bake Cakes Together

Cooking together is a very bonding experience. The little members can’t do a huge amount, but they only need to be old enough to stir the mixture to help out. Some children are old enough to use cookie-cutters or to sift flour into the bowl.
